Introduction
Ramalinga Vallalar placed Jeevakarunyam (compassion for all living beings) at the very center of spiritual life. He taught that true devotion to God is not found in rituals alone, but in the way we treat other living beings with love, care, and kindness.
Explanation
Jeevakarunyam is the practice of showing unconditional compassion to every form of life without any discrimination of caste, religion, status, or species. Vallalar strongly emphasized that causing harm to any living being is against the path of true spirituality. He believed that all lives are equal and are expressions of the same divine light.
One of the most important aspects of Jeevakarunyam is feeding the hungry. Vallalar considered hunger to be the greatest suffering among all forms of pain. He insisted that relieving hunger is the highest form of worship, even greater than prayers, rituals, or temple offerings. According to him, if a person ignores the suffering of a hungry being, their spiritual practices lose their value.
He also promoted a non-violent and pure lifestyle, encouraging people to avoid killing and to follow vegetarianism. He believed that purity in food leads to purity in mind, and purity in mind leads to spiritual awakening. Compassion must not remain just a feeling; it should be expressed through daily actions such as helping the needy, speaking kindly, and living gently without causing harm.
Vallalar further explained that Jeevakarunyam is the foundation for all higher spiritual experiences. Without compassion, meditation and yoga cannot lead to true realization. A compassionate heart becomes soft and pure, and in such a heart, the divine presence naturally reveals itself as inner light. This inner transformation gradually leads a person toward higher states of consciousness and ultimately to the realization of Arutperumjothi.
Conclusion
Jeevakarunyam is not just a moral teaching but a complete spiritual path given by Vallalar. It teaches us to live with love, kindness, and responsibility toward all living beings. By practicing compassion in thought, word, and action, one can purify the heart and progress toward divine grace and true enlightenment.
